Another railway level crossing video, this time at Birkdale.

Southport

Well the weather is nice so why not go to the seaside? So, at the weekend i did! I went up to Liverpool then travelled on a bit further to Southport. I had a walk along the beach, unfortunately the tide was a long way out but it did mean i could walk under the pier. You can see my photos here.

Churches (261) : St Oswald, Bidston

The parish church of St Oswald in Bidston on the Wirral was originally built in the 13th century. The tower was added in the 15th. The church was rebuilt in the Gothic Revival style in the mid-1850s. The church has a nave with north and south aisles, a west tower and a chancel.

The church is built from coursed and squared rubble.

South Liverpool

At the weekend i went up to Liverpool, this time not charging about hunting for new stations for a change. Instead i wanted to visit some places in the south of the city that i had only had a fleeting time at on previous Liverpool trips, this included a walk along the Overpool promenade of the Mersey. I also visited the ruins of St Luke's church in the centre. You can see my photos here.

Churches (216) : St Bartholomew, Roby

The parish church of St Bartholomew in Roby, Merseyside was built in 1875. The church has a nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles and a chancel with a round apse. The west tower has a broach spire.

The church is made from rock faced stone with an ashlar dressing.

So, it is time to begin the 2024 rail adventures. They began at the weekend with a trip to Merseyside. I was able to tick off three more stations and enjoy some trips on the soon-to-be retired Class 507s. You can see my photos here.

Back to Birkenhead

I went to Liverpool a few weeks ago and was shocked at how fast the new Merseyrail trains were taking over from the old BR era Classes 507 and 508 trains. Thus i headed back up yesterday to check out the old trains before it is too late! The old trains are mainly on the Wirral now so i took the opportunity to visit Bidston and also a church in Birkenhead. You can see my photos here.

Kirkby et cetera

On Monday, for the final part of my long birthday weekend, i headed up to Liverpool. I went to Kirkby to be exact to see Headbolt Lane, which is currently (at time of writing) the newest railway station on the network. I also had a look around Kirkby and did some travelling on the new Merseyrail Class 777s. You can see my photos here.

Merseyside memories

On Saturday i headed up to Merseyside to revisit a couple of places from my past. I went to Formby where i have been a couple of times before but not for a long time. My Dad's best friend lived there, i remember playing football on the beach though didn't visit the beach here this time. I then went to Waterloo and Crosby beach, the first place i ever lived though i was too young to remember it. Apparently my mum took me to the opening of Waterloo Marina by Princess Anne back in the early 1970s, i wish i had some memories of back then! Ellesmere Port stations

On Saturday i headed up to Liverpool for the first time this year. My aim was to visit the three stations in Ellesmere Port, including Ellesmere Port itself, Little Sutton and Overpool. This was successfully achieved, and you can see my photos here.

Churches (152) : St Nicholas, Wallasey

The parish church of St Nicholas in Wallasey on the Wirral, despite appearances, dates from the early 20th century. Work began on the church in 1910 and it opened the following year. The plan of the church is in the opposite direction to the usual liturgical direction with the chancel at the West. The church has a central tower, North and South aisles on the nave with transepts. There is a Lady chapel to the South and a vestry to the North.

The church was built out of Storeton sandstone. The church is sometimes known as the Golfer's church due to it's proximity to Wallasey golf club!

On Saturday i headed up to Merseyside and side some exploring around Wallasey and New Brighton. I also had a look at the new Merseyrail trains which will enter service soon, they had a public demonstration at Birkenhead North. You can see my Wallasey and New Brighton photographs here.

Liverpool success

After last week's failure to achieve "Plan A" i headed back up to Liverpool on Saturday to give it another try! This time the plan worked perfectly, my carefully worked out plan to see four new stations on the Wirral was correct, which pleased me of course. I even had enough time to see a fifth new station!
