At the weekend i headed up to Attenborough in Nottinghamshire. There, i revisited the nature reserve (which are former gravel pits) and then walked along the Trent until i reached the Beeston Cut (or canal). This was a nice walk with some good scenery, and plenty of boats too!

The parish church of St Mary in Lowdham, Nottinghamshire dates from the 13th century. The church has a nave with north and south aisles and clerestory, a chancel and a vestry. The tower is 13th century but the spire was added in the 15th.
The church was restored in the 19th century. The church is built from ashlar.
The church of St Peter with St James is one of three medieval parish churches in the city of Nottingham. The original church was a wooden one built around 1100 but work on the current church began around 1180 after the wooden church was destroyed in a fire. Much of the surviving church however, dates from the 15th century.
The church has a nave with two aisles and clerestory. The church has a three bay chancel and a north transept. The west tower has a spire.
I felt like going somewhere new this week so on Saturday i headed to Nottinghamshire and to Collingham near Newark (the other side of the East Coast Main Line in fact). A nice little village with the usual medieval church and some interesting buildings, plus the station of course. The original station building is out of use and a bit derelict nowadays but looked fascinating. You can see my photos here.
The parish church of St Mary the Virgin and All Souls in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire was built in the mid-1800s to replace an earlier (11th century) dilapidated church which had been damaged in a storm. There may have been churches on the site dating back to Saxon times.
The new church was consecreted in 1850. A chancel was added in 1900. A north chapel added in 1946. The church has an aisled nave, a west tower, a chancel and the north chapel and vestry. The church is built from rubble stone with an ashlar dressing.
The parish church of St Denis in the village of Morton in Nottinghamshire dates from 1756. The church has a nave and chancel with a small apse. There is a west tower with four stages and a vestry on the north side of the church.
The church is built from brick with a stone dressing.
It has been awhile since i went somewhere new on a weekend trip. So, on Saturday i went to Bingham in Nottinghamshire, a nice little market town with a cute church - which was open too which was nice. You can see my photos here.
Complicated railway connections are a bit of a, as Americans say, crap shoot these days (some sort of card game i believe, i only play gin rummy). I had intended to spend two hours up in Kirkby-in-Ashfield in Nottinghamshire to properly explore the area and visit two stations. My visit was cut short by an hour so i only visited one station and the area around it! Still it was nice to go somewhere new even if i didn't really see anything that exciting, you can see my photos here.
The parish church of St Mary the Virgin has Saxon origins and is the oldest church in Nottingham. Most of the current building though dates from the 14th and 15th centuries including the nave and south aisle. The tower was completed in the early 16th century. The church was restored in the 1840s.
The church is in the Gothic perpendicular style and is made from ashlar. The church is laid out in a cruciform plan with a crossing tower and transepts. There is a nave with aisles, though the chancel does not have aisles.
I went to Nottingham yesterday, aiming to travel on the Nottingham Express Transit's trams at last (in the past i've only photographed them operating). So, armed with a very fairly priced day ticket i headed down to Wilford (which has a very nice church) and further down to Clifton. You can see my photos here.
The parish church of St Mary Magdalene in Newark in Nottinghamshire has 12th century origins though is the third church on the site. Parts of the current church including the crypt date from about 1180. The west tower dates from 1220 though the spire was added in the following century. Most of the current church including the nave, aisles and chancel date from a rebuilding in the 15th century.
The church, which is in the Gothic style, was restored in the 19th and 20th centuries. The church is largely built from ashlar masonry.
The parish church of St John the Baptist in Beeston, Nottinghamshire dates from the 13th century though has been extensively rebuilt more than once and little of the original church, which is first mentioned in 1231, survives. A font which dates from the reign of Henry III and carvings in the chancel survive from it's early days.
The church was rebuilt during the reign of Henry VIII though the current church is largely the result of a rebuilding in 1842 which was extensive and covered all areas of the church except the chancel.
I didn't go anywhere on Saturday due to the Coronation of King Charles III which i wanted to watch, i was not feeling well in any case. By Monday and the extra bank holiday i was feeling better so headed up north to Mansfield. A fine old town it is too, just a pity the weather wasn't too good but it could have been worse, the rain largely held off. You can see my photos here.

Its been a while since i have been to the centre of Nottingham (i've been to a couple of the outskirt towns recently). I had a good canal walk along the Nottingham Canal until it met the mighty river Trent. Returning to the centre i explored the historic heart and some of the fine old buildings.
