I haven't been to Wales for some time, indeed only once this year so far. So, yesterday i headed to Powys to visit the village of Caersŵs which is on the river Severn, though the river is a bit of a tiddler here compared to how it is like in places like Worcester. Caersŵs is a nice place, and you can see my photos here.

Churches (222) : All Saints, Newtown

The church of All Saints in Newtown, Powys was built in the late 1880s in the Early English style. The church has a nave and chancel and a south aisle. The organ is located in the north transept. The south transept holds the vestry, with a tower above it. The upper stages of the tower are octagonal.

The church is built from snecked Llanymynech limestone masonry with Grimshall freestone dressings.

Dovey Junction

Time for one final rail adventure in 2023, and maybe the most amazing of all. I travelled to Dovey Junction in the west of Wales, this is the oddest station i have ever been to. It is literally in the middle of nowhere with no settlement within view, and a nature reserve surrounding the station. The nearest settlement is a tiny hamlet called Glandyfi which is about a kilometre away along a rough path. To be honest the weather wasn't ideal for a location so remote, with heavy rain and wind but i enjoyed it all the same! You can see my photos here, i must return one day - when the sun is out!

Churches (202) : St Mary, Newtown / Y Drenewydd

The church of St Mary is a former Anglican church in Newtown in Powys. The church was built along with the town itself in the late 13th century which was built by Roger de Mortimer on land granted to him by King Edward I of England following the defeat of Llewelyn the Last. The church was built on the site of an existing chapel next to the river Severn. The church had a double nave and was made from rubble with a red sandstone dressing. The west tower has a wooden bell stage.

The church was abandoned in 1856 following decades of problem caused by flooding due to the proximity of the river. Although much of the church is now in ruins the 13th century bell tower was restored in 1939. At the church is the grave of Robert Owen the founder of the cooperative movement.

Churches (193) : St Peter, Machynlleth

The church of St Peter in Machynlleth, Powys mostly dates from a rebuilding in 1827. However, the church has existed since 1254 at least. The oldest part of the current church is part of the west tower from the 15th century.

The nave is six bay and aisleless. The tower has three stages. The church was given a Gothic feel in modifications made in 1894. The church is largely built from coursed local rubble.

Machynlleth

At the weekend i made another trip to Wales, travelling to Machynlleth in West Wales. This is a lovely little town that is well worth a visit. Lots of book and antique shops, i did visit one of the latter but unfortunately no typewriters! You can see my photos here.

Newtown / Y Drenewydd

Its been some time since i've been to Wales, so yesterday i headed to Newtown (or Y Drenewydd if you prefer) in Powys. This is a lovely town in the East of Wales with a number of interesting buildings including the ruins of the church of St Mary. You can see my photos here.
